I was having coffee with my friend Jason the other day, and he was telling me a story about an important lesson his son had learned through a video game of all places. Like many people, I’ve leaned toward the belief that video games do more bad than good, but I’ve noticed my stance on that softening somewhat over the years. I’m still reluctant to let my kids have their own system, but I will concede that, if used properly, they can be a safe form of entertainment. However, I didn’t know they could instill the important lesson that I’m about to share.
My friend is a big gamer, and loves cuddling up on the couch with his young son to engage in the latest immersive experience. Most recently, they were playing a game that landed them on a distant planet, and they had to come up with creative ways to survive and thrive. It was one of those games that you play multiple times, until you hopefully win.
That day eventually came for this father and son duo, and the little guy turned to his dad and said, “When we started this game, we didn’t have anything, but look at all the stuff we built!” To this, my friend asked his son what he learned from that experience, and his child responded with the recognition that reaching this goal required them to put in a lot of work. What a great lesson for a kid to learn at such a young age right?
Sadly, many people go their entire lives, and this basic truth never sinks in. They are able to articulate the many things they want from life, but often fall short of making it happen because it just feels like too much work. Or they put in a certain amount of work that they believe is enough to reach a particular goal, only to feel unfairly duped when that desired result doesn’t transpire, not realizing more effort would have gotten them there.
For most of us, including myself, hard work sucks, which is why I’ve made it one of my biggest tasks in life to discover ways to make self development easy for others. The reason I do that is because I know all too well the perils of trying to make a big change in my life only to fall back into that old version of myself. This is why I try my best to create programs that don’t just make these changes simple to implement, but are also fun to do. Essentially, I create programs that I’d want to engage in, because if I wouldn’t like it, then why would you?
Years ago, I learned how powerful this approach can be if you get it right when I started down the path of writing a book that was meant to help others develop more meaningful human connections in their life. Originally I was reluctant to do it, because I figured that people didn’t need my help, assuming the majority of my fellow citizens already understood the basics of building those types of bonds. However, years later, when I finally got off my ass and did it, I was amazed by the number of people telling me how much of an impact it had on their relationships with others. Truthfully, I wasn’t expecting that type of response, but I realized later that it was because I had written a book that I’d want to read too!
More than a decade later, I found myself thinking, “What if I turned that book into a course?” That way I could bring it to life with film clips, animation, motion graphics, humor and more! Instead of having to read the words, people could engage in them the same way they do when they watch videos on social media. Of course, those ideas look great on paper, but getting them to a point where people from all around the world can click a few buttons and take the course is a whole other thing. It took about two years to get there, but eventually the dream became a reality. And I believe I managed to again hit that goal of creating something that helps people make positive changes in their life that is fun, and without having to put in a ton of effort.
However, it’s impossible to morph into a new version of ourselves without at least a little bit of work. Even my friend’s young son has recently discovered that powerful truth. In the case of that course I created, it requires that the participant watches a short video lasting 20-30 minutes once a week for eight weeks, and then doing the fun exercises that are attached to each lesson. To some people that sounds like a lot of work, and all I would say to them is that I can’t make it any easier than I already have. But those who don’t see that as being too big of a commitment, they are now steps away from having the rare skill of being able to spark life changing conversations anywhere, anytime.

Whether it’s at work, or at the dinner table, knowing how to make others feel respected, admired, valued and seen based on the types of questions you choose to ask is a superpower that few possess, but is easy to attain. When I talk about this fact with other people who know how to do it, we often laugh while saying, “If people only knew how easy it is to do this stuff, and the kind of impact it would have on their life, they’d be blown away!” And yet, so many think it’s a skill that only a special few are born with.
That simply isn’t the case. The truth is that it’s a skill you either choose to have, or not. It’s like exercise. You either choose to do it regularly, or you don’t. There isn’t any secret formula. I know that, because I’ve seen so many people choose to commit to the lessons I teach on this subject, and then listen as they tell me how much their life has changed because of it. Nothing complicated. They just do the work.
For this reason, I have decided to make an offer to those finding themselves wanting to shake their life up for the better in 2026. If that’s you, I’ve decided to offer my Tribe Certified Program at half the price we normally sell it.
