The Quiet Strength of Surrender

A man surrendering to the Universe
A man surrendering to the Universe

Let’s go deeper with a question and have a self connection shall we?  Here it is.

How good are you at surrendering?  Let me explain.

So, right out of the gate, I can tell you my answer to that question is that I suck at it.  Surrendering for me is almost the same thing as giving up, which is something I refuse to do.  What, you want me to just let go and trust that things are moving in the exact direction that they are supposed to?  Are you crazy?  I’m Stuart Knight.  I control outcomes!

Which of course is a joke.  I don’t control outcomes.  I can try to influence outcomes, but ultimately there are too many variables at play for me to expect that I can outright control the way things will turn out.  I suspect that a lot of parents with grown children can relate to this.  You did everything you could to control the parameters of your child’s life, but at the end of the day, they are the ones that will choose their destiny.

So, I recently found myself in this situation where all of my traditional approaches to business no longer seem to be working the way they have for decades.  You know, we have an exciting new online course, we have a one of a kind team building experience, and of course we still have the keynote speeches I offer to audiences.  However, for some reason all of the ways in which I used to generate conversations with clients about these things no longer seem to be working.  And that’s a weird experience to have.  In fact, you may have gone through something similar to this in your own life.  Have you ever experienced something like this?

You know, like maybe the past approach you always took toward getting a job, or the way you have always cultivated a strong relationship with your partner, or how you have always fostered great friendships, all of a sudden stops working.  It’s as if the wisdom you have gained from all of your experiences is no longer relevant.  And that can leave you feeling very confused where you find yourself thinking, “If this approach that’s always worked in the past is no longer working, what do I do now?”

And the obvious answer to that question is to try a different approach, which sounds great on paper, but is not always easy to do in practice.  Which is why I think there needs to be a step in between.  And that step is to surrender.  To just let go of holding on to the past, and instead get quiet so that you can begin hearing important messages from the future.  Now, if you’re like me, that’s a very hard thing to do, because you feel like not doing something is a cop out, or a failure, or is giving up.  You feel like you have to be actively doing something in order to fix the problem, but I’ve learned that choosing not to do something is actually choosing to do something.

And I’ve found that when I choose to stop, sit quiet, and do nothing, slowly but surely new wisdom begins seeping in.  New ideas, new perspectives and new approaches present themselves saying, “Hey, do you want to level up?  If so, follow me”  And if you do choose to follow this new wisdom, all of a sudden you begin morphing into the higher version of yourself who is able to attract an even better relationship with your partner, or even closer friendships, or even better opportunities within your career.  Which can be a pretty powerful experience to have.

But to get there, you’ve got to surrender first.

Much love,

Stuart
